James Gunn recently shared a behind-the-scenes photo celebrating the anniversary of The Engineer, a character appearing in the upcoming Superman film. In a social media post, Gunn highlighted María Gabriela De Faría’s portrayal of the character and acknowledged creators Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch. Meanwhile, new details about Superman’s cast, story, and connections to the DCU continue to surface.
New look at María Gabriela’s the Engineer in Superman
Superman director James Gunn posted the image of María Gabriela De Faría in her Engineer costume lying on the field of a stadium. Gunn wrote, “Happy Anniversary to the Engineer, created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, who you can see played to sinister perfection by puppy in human form @thefaria in #Superman this July!”
Superman is the first live-action film in the new DC Universe. The film features Superman alongside Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Perry White, and Lex Luthor. It also includes Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, Metamorpho, Guy Gardner, and The Engineer. Some rumors suggest Supergirl, played by Milly Alcock, may also appear before featuring in her solo film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
The Superman teaser trailer became the most-watched DC and Warner Bros. trailer, receiving over 250 million views in its first 24 hours. Gunn previously shared other promotional content on social media leading up to the film’s release.

Krypto the Superdog will also appear in the film.
Superman is scheduled to come out in theaters on July 11, 2025.
