Mets Catcher Francisco Alvarez’s Hand Injury Will Need Surgery

Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez is facing a setback, picking up a hand injury that will require surgery. The injury is expected to keep him out for a few weeks. With Alvarez on the injured list, many are concerned about when he will return to play for the Mets.

In this article, we will delve into the details of Alvarez’s injury.

How did Francisco Alvarez get injured?

Francisco Alvarez has suffered a fractured hamate bone in his left hand, an injury that occurred while swinging during live batting practice, according to Mets manager Carlos Mendoza. Alvarez is set to undergo surgery on Monday and is expected to be out for 6-8 weeks.

Addressing the injury, Mendoza admitted it was a significant setback for the team but remained hopeful. He said, “It’s a big blow when your starting catcher goes down. But guys will step up. Guys will get opportunities, what we have in house and I am sure [president of baseball operations] David [Stearns] will be looking outside.” (via New York Post)

This marks the second consecutive season Alvarez has faced an issue with his left hand, which is also his receiving hand. Last April, he suffered a torn ligament in his left thumb that required surgery.

When will Francisco Alvarez return to play for Mets?

Francisco Alvarez is expected to miss 6-8 weeks due to an injury to his glove hand. Manager Carlos Mendoza anticipates Alvarez will need the full eight weeks to recover, given his position as a catcher. If the recovery goes as planned, Alvarez could return to the Mets lineup by early May.

Last season, Alvarez injured his left thumb while rounding first base, requiring surgery that sidelined him for seven weeks. While he made a strong return, Alvarez struggled in the second half. In Alvarez’s absence, backup Luis Torrens will take over as the starting catcher. The Mets also have Chris Williams, Hayden Senger, and Jakson Reetz as backup options. Alvarez will join pitchers Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas on the injured list to start the season.
