Naughty Dog‘s critically acclaimed series The Last of Us is arguably one of the most notable franchises in PlayStation history. Spawning two games and a TV show, it seems logical Sony would want to create more stories in this already expansive world with The Last of Us 3. However, Naughty Dog CEO Neil Druckmann potentially marked the end of the beloved series with a recent comment.
What is The Last of Us 3 update?
In an interview with Variety, Druckmann was asked about the possibility of Naughty Dog developing The Last of Us 3. After all, the series has been so incredibly successful for the studio and Sony Interactive Entertainment it could almost assumed a third installment would be in the works. Unfortunately for those looking forward to more Clickers ripping people’s faces off, Druckmann suggested that The Last of Us Part 2 may have been the end of Ellie’s video game story.
“I was waiting for this question,” Druckmann began. “I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of ‘Last of Us.’ This could be it.”
In some ways, it isn’t a surprise Naughty Dog isn’t focused on telling more stories based on its fungal-infected post-apocalyptic world. During The Game Awards 2024, the studio announced its next game will be Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Players will assume the role of bounty hunter Jordan A. Mun (portrayed by Tati Gabrielle) as they attempt to escape threats on the planet Sempiria. A release date has yet to be announced, but it will feature music from award-winning composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
Since Naughty Dog uses the word “franchise” to describe Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, that may suggest the studio is shifting its focus on telling stories within its new sci-fi world. Of course, that is just speculation. We’ll know more about Naughty Dog’s future when they inevitably announce their next move.
