Gabrielle Union reveals Dwyane Wade is cancer-free
The Bad Boys II actress has announced that her husband, Dwyane Wade, is officially cancer-free after undergoing surgery to remove a cyst tumor from his kidney.
The NBA Hall of Famer initially revealed his diagnosis in January on an episode of WY Network’s The Why With Dwyane Wade podcast. He shared that surgeons removed 40% of his right kidney on December 18, 2023.
During a February 27 episode of The View, Gabrielle Union was asked about Wade’s condition. She responded, “Yes, he’s had the surgery and he’s cancer-free, but it was a challenge.” Union admitted that she was initially in shock after hearing the diagnosis, saying, “You hear cancer [and] you’re paralyzed because you think of the absolute worst-case scenario. I’ve had so many friends who are cancer survivors. I didn’t go there; I went to ‘he’s gone.’”
The actress also revealed that Wade kept the news private, choosing not to tell everyone, including some family members. While discussing his health battle on The WY Network podcast, he admitted that the experience left him feeling physically and emotionally vulnerable.
Dwyane Wade shared, “It was the first time that my family, my dad, my kids, they saw me weak. That moment was probably the weakest point I’ve ever felt in my life.” He ultimately decided to go through with the surgery to prevent the cancer from spreading.
The couple share their 6-year-old daughter Kaavia James. Additionally, Wade has a son named Zaire and a daughter, Zaya, with his ex-wife Siohvaughn Funches. He also has a son, Xavier, with Aja Metoyer.
