After breaking out in Thelma & Louise in 1991, one of Brad Pitt’s early leading roles that proved he was here to stay was 1994’s Legends of the Fall. Directed by Edward Zwick, the Western drama features a great cast that includes Anthony Hopkins, Aidan Quinn, Julia Ormond, and Henry Thomas. Now slightly after its 30th anniversary, Sony has put out a great Legends of the Fall 4K release.
“A passionate journey into the darkest secrets of love, betrayal, and the unbreakable bonds of blood, Legends of the Fall is a powerful story about three brothers struggling to stay together and the woman who comes between them,” says the official description.
While Quinn and Hopkins are predictably strong in the film, Brad Pitt’s lead performance really stood out when watching the Legends of the Fall 4K release. It really cemented Pitt as one of our most reliable movie stars — you’ll see him later this year in F1 — and it really showed that he was more than just a hunk (although he is exceptionally hunky in this). There is a lot of melodrama in the script, so your mileage may vary there, but I found myself heavily entertained.
As far as the Legends of the Fall 4K goes technically, it’s an incredible transfer. Zwick’s film won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography as it is wonderfully shot by John Toll and it truly impresses here. Gorgeous color grading that makes landscapes truly stun and wonderful detail that brings out the best of each performance. This is one of Sony’s best 4K transfers and is a great way to show off your home theater thanks to its stellar Dolby Atmos track.
For special features, there’s not much new with the Legends of the Fall 4K release. However, it does carry over some great ones from past home releases, including two separate commentary tracks (one with Pitt and Zwick, and another with Toll and production designer Lilly Kilvert). There’s also deleted scenes with director commentary, plus two featurettes and the trailer. The two commentaries really make this an easy recommendation and add some serious rewatch value.
Legends of the Fall 4K Review: Final Verdict
Legends of the Fall 4K is one of Sony’s best home releases yet. A gorgeous transfer that regularly wows and a film that has aged well thanks to Pitt’s performance, this is a great film to either revisit or watch for the first time. 4K discs don’t get much better than this and you’ll be in for a treat.
