Mark’s reintegration seems almost complete by the end of Severance Season 2 Episode 7.
Episode 7 revolved around Mark’s reintegration and Gemma’s tortured fate at Lumon. The dizzy edit of the episode ensures Mark’s “reintegration” memories and Gemma’s subconscious flow parallelly.
For most of the episode, Mark does not wake up. He finally wakes up at the end of the episode and mumbles the phrase, “Chikhai Bardo.” Viewers have already got the context of the phrase from the episode. It was Lumon who sent Gemma the “Chikhai Bardo” cards. The cards could have been the first direct communication from Lumon to Mark’s wife.
As Mark wakes up and remembers the scene, he will most likely be able to join the dots between how Gemma ended up on Lumon’s floor. To put it simply, it seems Lumon had been keeping an eye on both Mark and Gemma’s lives, including their fertility journey with IVF. Upon looking closely, viewers can see a discreet Doctor Mauer (Lumon employee) passing by Gemma and Mark at the hospital in a flashback scene.
Just as Fields and Burt mentioned how Lumon “knew” about their troubles regarding afterlife thoughts, Helena‘s company also invaded Mark and Gemma’s lives after watching them closely.
Meanwhile, Mark seemingly gets a flashback of a memory of Innie Mark and Ms. Casey’s day at MDR after Helly’s attempt to kill herself. The scene is crucial in two ways. Firstly, that was the first time when Mark and Ms. Casey crossed each other in the narrow break room (Season 1).
The scene suggested something more between the two by how they were almost spellbound. Secondly, it can also prove that Lumon has valid reasons to fear how strongly “severance” can control or hold individuals. In some instances, the outer lives of severed employees seem to pierce through.
