Recent developments have led fans to wonder if DC’s Booster Gold and The Authority are canceled. Both projects were introduced as part of the newer DCU, which is now being shaped by co-CEOs, James Gunn and Peter Safran. However, as there are not many updates on their progress, fans think their future to grace big and small screens is uncertain. But, what is their current status? Here are the details.
Is The Authority movie and DC’s Booster Gold series canceled by James Gunn?
Gunn hasn’t canceled The Authority movie and DC’s Booster Gold series, as of yet.
Recently, MyTimeToShineHello, a popular scooper, shared some new insights on upcoming DCU projects on X (formerly Twitter). The scooper claimed that though the Booster Gold series is still in development, it has lost its potential showrunner, Danny McBride, due to a lack of interest. The studio now continues to find his replacement to proceed with the project.
A few days ago, during a press event, Gunn officially clarified the upcoming series status. He revealed that it is “going pretty strong” (via ComicBook). Given the latest update, it’s unlikely that the studio is going to scrap the series. For the unversed, the series is about a disgraced football player, who leverages advanced technology to time-travel and goes on to become a superhero.
Further, MyTimeToShineHello revealed details about The Authority movie. The insider wrote, “Currently on pause because it’s considered too risky. WB and Zaslav are hesitant to invest $150M+ in an R-rated film based on a lesser known IP, which is understandable. They’re exploring alternatives, possibly turning it into an animated movie or lowering the budget.”
The recent Variety article also unveiled that The Authority movie has “moved to the back burner.” Safran said, “It’s a very, very big movie if you’re going to do The Authority properly. And some story elements perhaps that are in Superman and some of the other films that we’ve fast-tracked step a little bit on The Authority.” Moreover, Gunn mentioned that they are having a “harder time” getting a script. Also, the movie doesn’t appear to be on their priority list. So, it remains unclear when the movie will grace the theatres. While The Authority is currently on pause, it doesn’t seem to have been canceled as of yet.
