Martin Scorsese‘s movie starring Dwayne Johnson and Leonardo DiCaprio may skip out on a theatrical release, according to a recent report in the Puck newsletter.
Why might the Dwayne Johnson & Leonardo DiCaprio movie not be released in theaters?
According to the latest edition of the newsletter, the expectation for the mysterious movie is that it will end up going to “the highest bidder,” which could end up being a streaming platform. The newsletter mentions that Netflix will not be offering up a big theatrical release should it win out, meaning that the film might end up with only a limited release should a streamer land it.
For Scorsese, this isn’t too much of a change in pace. While his 2023 film Killers of the Flower Moon was given a wide release, his 2019 film The Irishman, which Netflix distributed, was only given a limited theatrical release before moving directly to the streaming platform.
Currently, not a whole lot is known about the planned movie, but it is said that it will focus on a “ruthless Hawaiian crime boss” who is based on a real-life figure. A description from Deadline’s original report on the film notes that it will be set in “a turbulent time on the island paradise when an aspiring mob boss battled rival crime factions to wrest control of the underworld of the Hawaiian islands.”
“In 1960s and 70s Hawaii, this formidable and charismatic mob boss rises to build the islands’ most powerful criminal empire, waging a brutal war against mainland corporations and rival syndicates while fighting to preserve his ancestral land,” reads more of the description. “It’s based on the untold true story of a man who fought to preserve his homeland through a ruthless quest for absolute power — igniting the last great American mob saga, where the war for cultural survival takes place in the unlikeliest of places: paradise.”
It’s not immediately clear how large of roles Johnson, DiCaprio, and Blunt will have in the film. The three of them will produce the movie alongside Scorsese, Bilton, Dany Garcia, Lisa Frechette, and Rick Yorn.
DiCaprio has worked with Scorsese many times before, their most recent collaboration being 2023’s Killers of the Flower Moon. Blunt starred in 2009’s The Young Victoria, which was produced by Scorsese, while Johnson has never worked with Scorsese until now.
