In a recent discussion, Angela Bassett clarified her stolid reaction to Curtis’ 2023 Oscar win, which instantly went viral on the internet while also stating that she was “deserving” of the title for her Black Panther: Wakanda Forever role.
While speaking to Town & Country magazine, the 66-year-old actress noted, “I found it interesting. Interesting that I wouldn’t be allowed to be disappointed at an outcome where I thought I was deserving.” Bassett then reaffirmed her compassionate side by adding, “I love applauding people,” before delving deep into why the loss affected her. “No, I have put in: put in the time, put in good work over time. I didn’t think that was a gift. I thought it was a given,” she remarked.
Angela Bassett secured the second Oscar nod of her career for Black Panther 2, with her first nomination dating back to 1994 when she made it to the Best Actress category for her role in What’s Love Got to Do With It. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever also marked Bassett’s exit from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the movie showcasing her character’s demise at the hands of Tenoch Huerta Mejía’s Namor.
After her 2023 loss at the Academy Awards, Bassett ultimately received an Honorary Oscar in 2024.
