Why Fans Think Zack Snyder Is Returning to DC in James Gunn’s DCU

James Gunn, CEO and Chairman of DC Studios, recently shared an image with acclaimed director Zack Snyder, sparking a fan frenzy. Fans are now speculating about a potential collaboration between the two and even hoping for the revival of the long-dead Snyderverse. But does this latest image hint at Snyder’s return to the DCU? Here are the details.

Is Zack Snyder returning to restore the Snyderverse in James Gunn’s DCU?

No, Snyder is not returning to DCU to restore the Snyderverse. Moreover, he is not appointed to direct any future DC films either, as of now.

Gunn, recently took to X (formerly Twitter) sharing an all-smile image of him and Snyder. His tweet read, “Always a pleasure catching up with my friend @ZackSnyder, consummate filmmaker (and a doubly consummate storyteller!).” His post sparked wide discussions among fans, who wanted the duo to collaborate on a DCU project.

Many fans urged Gunn to let Snyder direct a Batman movie in his new superhero universe, praising the filmmaker’s dark storytelling in past DCU films. Others also put forward their demands to restore the Snyderverse. Aside from DCU expectations, some also jotted down some movie ideas for their potential future collaborations.

Snyder made his DC debut back in 2013 with Henry Cavill-led Man of Steel. Since then, fans have loved him for his faithful comic adaptations, dark filmmaking style, stunning visuals, and strong direction. However, he departed from the universe due to a family tragedy in 2017. It led to Joss Whedon taking over his incomplete Justice League project. After the movie’s release, fans upon learning about Snyder’s Justice League rough version, immediately demanded the studios to release the cut via petitions and social media hashtags. The movement “SnyderCut” garnered massive attention, leading to fans’ wishes being heard. Zack Snyder’s Justice League arrived in limited theatres in 2021.

Currently, Gunn is at the helm of the newer DC universe. He directed the first DCU movie, Superman, featuring David Corenswet as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. The upcoming movie will release on July 11, 2025. Meanwhile, Snyder is working on a new Netflix movie about the Los Angeles police department.
