Hilaria Baldwin Addresses Fake Accent Controversy, Says She’s Still ‘Hurt’

It has been over four years since Hilaria Baldwin found herself at the center of a controversy over her Spanish accent. She recently decided to speak on the subject in the pilot episode of her family’s new reality show The Baldwins, which premieres on TLC on February 23, 2025.

What did Hilaria Baldwin say about fake accent controversy?

Hilaria Baldwin stars alongside her husband, actor Alec Baldwin, and their children in The Baldwins. She chose the show’s premiere episode to address the accent controversy she claims made her “sad” and “hurt” her.

“I love English, I also love Spanish, and when I mix the two it doesn’t make me inauthentic, and when I mix the two, that makes me normal,” Hilaria Baldwin stated. “I’d be lying if I said [the controversy] didn’t make me sad and it didn’t hurt and it didn’t put me in dark places,” she added. Hilaria Baldwin, 41, explained that her family, friends, and community were made up of people who “speak multiple languages” and “belonged in multiple places” and claimed that it influenced “how we sound and an impact on how we articulate things and the words that we choose and our mannerisms.” She continued, “That’s normal. That’s called being human.”

Notably, Alec and Hilaria Baldwin — who is a yoga instructor, entrepreneur, podcaster, and author — got married in June 2012. In December 2020, Hilaria was accused of faking a Spanish accent and subsequently of cultural appropriation. At the time, she stated that she spent some parts of her life in Massachusetts and some in Spain. She also asserted that she was culturally “fluid.”

On The Baldwins, Hilaria Baldwin confirmed she was bringing up her children as bilinguals. She added, “My family — all my nuclear family — now lives over in Spain. I want to teach my kids pride in speaking more than one language. I think just growing up and speaking two languages is extremely special.”

The Baldwins airs on Sundays at 10:00 pm ET.
