Netflix seemingly has big plans for its Chronicles of Narnia movies.
It was announced in July 2023 that Barbie’s Greta Gerwig had been hired to write and direct at least two films based on C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia for Netflix. Then, in January 2025, it was revealed that her first Narnia movie would get a two-week-long IMAX release.
The IMAX run could be extended based on demand. A regular, non-IMAX theatrical release is also being planned before the movie starts streaming on Netflix.
How many Chronicles of Narnia movies are planned?
Per Deadline, IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond mentioned in a recent earnings report that Netflix is planning on making eight Chronicles of Narnia movies.
“This was a really great movie [for us] because I think there are like eight movies planned…and what Imax does best is launch franchises and launch events, [and] this is the kind of movie that is very conducive to an Imax release,” Gelfond said.
There are seven Chronicles of Narnia books that were written by Lewis, including 1950’s The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, 1951’s Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia, 1952’s The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, 1953’s The Silver Chair, 1954’s The Horse and His Boy, 1955’s The Magician’s Nephew, and 1956’s The Last Battle.
This means there’s plenty of material for Netflix to pull from, though it’s not immediately clear if Gerwig’s first Narnia movie will be an adaptation of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe or The Magician’s Nephew, which serves as a prequel and tells of Narnia’s origins.
No casting for Netflix’s Chronicles of Narnia movies has been announced at this time.
Gerwig’s Chronicles of Narnia will be released in IMAX theaters on Thanksgiving Day in 2026. It will then premiere on Netflix on Christmas of the same year.
