New Live-Action Street Fighter Movie Finds Its Director

The upcoming live-action Street Fighter movie has found its director.

Legendary Entertainment and Capcom are currently working on a Street Fighter movie, which is scheduled to be released in 2026. Talk to Me’s Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou were previously attached to direct the film; however, they dropped out in June 2024 due to scheduling conflicts.

Kitao Sakurai has now been tapped to helm the Street Fighter movie, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Sakurai is best known for directing, writing, and executive producing The Eric Andre Show. He recently worked with Andre on 2021’s Bad Trip, the Netflix movie that Sakurai co-wrote and directed that co-stars Tiffany Haddish and Lil Rel Howery.

Additionally, Sakurai directed the 2010 film Aardvark and several episodes of Peacock’s Twisted Metal show. He is an executive producer on Beef Season 2 for Netflix and directed the pilot episode of a new Amazon Prime Video series titled Butterfly with Daniel Dae Kim, which does not yet have a premiere date.

What else do we know about the Street Fighter movie?

Plot details for the Street Fighter film remain under wraps at this time. No casting has yet been announced.

Street Fighter is considered to be one of the highest-grossing video game franchises of all time. It originated as an arcade game in 1987, while the most recent addition was 2023’s Street Fighter 6.

The video game franchise was previously adapted into a 1994 live-action film directed by Steven E. de Souza starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. That movie is currently available to stream on Starz. There have also been a number of other animated Street Fighter movies and projects since then, including Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie, which was released in the United States in January 1996.

Street Fighter has been given a March 20, 2026, release date from Sony Pictures Releasing.
