A Blue Bloods spin-off, featuring Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan from the original series, is officially in development at CBS. The project, Boston Blue (working title), will take place in Beantown, and not in New York City, where Blue Bloods was predominantly set. Further, the network announced the release date window for the upcoming series, and it is sooner than many fans would expect.

CBS has given a straight-to-series order to the Blue Bloods spin-off, Boston Blue. The network further revealed that it would be set in Boston and will come out sometime in the 2025-2026 broadcast season.
Boston Blue will revolve around Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan, who was one of the main characters in all 14 seasons of Blue Bloods. Danny is an NYPD Detective in the original series and the son of the New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck). Several other members of his family are also part of law enforcement, serving as the source of the title. In the upcoming show, Danny accepts a position at Boston PD, and “once in Boston, he is paired with detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family,” per the logline.
Blue Bloods debuted on CBS on September 24, 2010, and aired for 14 seasons before concluding on December 13, 2024. While the announcement that the show would end after the 14th season came in November 2023, the cast members, including Selleck, expressed hope that it would continue beyond that. Speculations about the expansion of the franchise had been around for a while. In June 2024, Paramount Global’s co-CEO Brian Robbins announced in a stockholders’ meeting that franchise expansions were on their way for several shows on the network, including Blue Bloods.
It’s unclear what role, if any, Robin Green and Mitchell Burgess, the creators of the original series, will play in the new project. At the time of this article’s composition, no cast member besides Wahlberg has been announced.
