Charlie Cox, known for playing Matt Murdock in Daredevil, recently discussed the show’s Netflix cancellation and revival on Disney+. In an interview, he confirmed that a dispute between Netflix and Disney led to the series ending despite its popularity. Cox also detailed how he was later invited back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Disney and Netflix’s feud canceled Daredevil Season 4, says Charlie Cox
In a GQ interview, Charlie Cox confirmed that Daredevil was canceled by Netflix in 2018 despite its popularity. “I got a call late at night, and my boss at Marvel Television at the time said, ‘They’ve pulled all the shows. All five of them,’” Cox recalled. He stated that the decision was influenced by a “feud between Netflix and Disney.” According to Variety, the contract between Marvel and Netflix prevented Disney from using the characters for two years after cancellation.
In 2018, Cox expressed his disappointment at the show’s abrupt end. “A lot of us really expected to keep going, and I certainly did,” he told Entertainment Weekly. He further stated, “It’s just how business works. But also, these characters mean a lot to people.” At the time of its cancellation, Daredevil’s writers had begun planning a fourth season, but Netflix ended its Marvel collaborations.
Following the cancellation, Cox took on theater roles, including Betrayal. During the run, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige attended a performance but did not mention Daredevil. “I went to shake his hand, and he was nice and enjoyed the play, but never mentioned Daredevil, never mentioned me,” Cox said.
In 2020, Feige contacted Cox unexpectedly. “I thought it was maybe going to be a charity thing… and then he said, ‘Are you interested in coming back?’” Cox agreed and later appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and Echo. Production for Daredevil: Born Again began in 2023 but was reworked following the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Cox said, “The strikes that were so terrible for so many people in the industry ended up being the best thing that happened for our particular show.”
Daredevil: Born Again is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on March 4.
