Why Fantastic Four’s Pedro Pascal Replaced John Krasinski as Reed Richards

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is no stranger to casting surprises, and the decision to cast Pedro Pascal replacing John Krasinski as Reed Richards in The Fantastic Four: First Steps has sparked discussions. After the latter’s brief appearance as the character in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, many fans assumed he would continue in the role. However, Marvel Studios had other plans.

Here’s why Pedro Pascal replaced John Krasinski as Mr. Fantastic.

Why was Pedro Pascal cast in Fantastic Four instead of John Krasinski?

John Krasinski taking on the role of Reed Richards in Doctor Strange 2 was a fan-service moment that entertained audiences. For years, fans had campaigned for Krasinski to play the genius leader of the Fantastic Four. So, his cameo in the 2022 film felt like a nod to those wishes. However, it was never intended to be more than a one-time appearance.

Director Sam Raimi explained this in the film’s commentary, saying, “It’s so funny that Kevin [Feige] cast John [Krasinski] because the fans had a dream of who the perfect Reed Richards would be. And because this is an alternate universe, I think Kevin said, ‘Let’s make that dream come true.’ I’ve always really enjoyed all of his performances.” In other words, Krasinski’s role was a fun Easter egg, not a long-term commitment (via The Direct).

Pedro Pascal was officially announced as the new Reed Richards earlier this month. Alongside Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Pascal leads the reboot of Marvel’s First Family.

The character demands both intellectual gravitas and human vulnerability, and Pascal’s track record suggests he can deliver on both fronts, making him an exciting choice for the role. Additionally, his current popularity ensures that The Fantastic Four will have a magnetic and bankable lead as it joins the MCU.
