Liam Neeson is widely celebrated for his roles in Schindler’s List, Batman Begins, and Taken. However, fans are unaware that the versatile actor has also turned down roles in some popular films. Among them were Boromir in Lord of the Rings and the legendary secret agent James Bond. So, why did Liam Neeson reject Lord of the Rings and James Bond?
Here is everything you need to know about the reason behind Neeson refusing the iconic roles.
Why did Liam Neeson turn down The Lord of the Rings’ Boromir?
Liam Neeson turned down The Lord of the Rings’ Boromir due to the repetition of early death sequences.
In Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Neeson portrayed Qui-Gon Jinn, a Jedi Master who dies early in the film at the hands of Darth Maul. After experiencing premature character death, Neeson hesitated when offered the role of Boromir in Lord of the Rings. In Lord of the Rings, Boromir is introduced as the eldest son of Denethor II, the Steward of Gondor, and the older brother of Faramir.
Despite his compelling arc, Boromir dies early in the trilogy, much like Qui-Gon Jinn. The Oscar-nominated actor did not feel like playing another character that was sacrificed early in the film. (via CBR)
Following Liam Neeson’s rejection, the role of Boromir was passed on to actor Sean Bean who is known for his roles in The Hitcher, Patriot Games, and GoldenEye.
Here’s why Liam Neeson rejected James Bond
Liam Neeson turned down James Bond for a deeply personal reason.
Aside from The Lord of the Rings’ Boromir, Neeson also turned the fan-favorite character of James Bond. In a 2023 interview with Rolling Stone, the actor revealed he was called by Barbara Broccoli about taking on the role of Agent 007.
Despite showing interest in the character, Neeson had to turn down the role due to the insistence of his partner, Natasha Richardson. Richardson warned him that she wouldn’t marry him if he took up the Agent 007 role. Neeson further added, ”Come on, there’s all those gorgeous girls in various countries getting into bed and getting out of bed. I’m sure a lot of her decision-making was based on that.”
After Neeson turned down the role, James Bond was ultimately played by actor Pierce Brosnan.
