Daredevil: Marvel Wanted Charlie Cox To Play Foggy Nelson Instead

Charlie Cox recently spoke about how he was initially shortlisted for the role of Foggy Nelson instead of Matt Murdock for the Netflix Daredevil series.

The actor will reprise the title role in the upcoming Marvel Studios production Daredevil: Born Again. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige announced the series in SDCC 2022 with the original cast including Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio returning in their roles.

Charlie Cox could have been Foggy Nelson instead of Daredevil

Charlie Cox recently had a chat with GQ Magazine and spoke about how he was first selected to play Foggy Nelson in the Daredevil series.

While the actor recounted his professional struggles after bagging his breakthrough role in the 2007 movie Stardust, he spoke about how he landed Matt Murdock. Cox recalled receiving a call from his agent regarding the audition he gave for the Netflix show when he moved back to Scotland and revealed, “I heard them say, ‘We need you to come to Los Angeles to test.'”

After failing to connect with the agent again due to technical difficulties, Cox asserted that he was informed through voicemails that Daredevil producers wanted him as Foggy Nelson, Matt Murdock’s closest pal and law partner.

However, Charlie Cox disclosed that he rejected the idea of testing for Nelson and added, “And for whatever reason, having had this kind of empowering experience, I said, ‘I will come, but I’m only reading for Matt. I’m only reading for the lead.'”

Daredevil aired on Netflix from 2015 to 2018 with Cox as Matt Murdock and Elden Henson as Foggy. It quickly became one of the most highly-rated shows on the platform. After a series of cameos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Cox is making his full debut in the MCU in Daredevil: Born Again, which will be released on March 4, 2025.
