Ella McCay Release Date Set for Emma Mackey Comedy Movie

Disney has officially announced the Ella McCay release date for 20th Century Studios’ upcoming comedy movie, which will be led by Barbie star Emma Mackey. This marks Mackey’s first high-profile movie as the titular lead, following her breakout performance in Netflix’s teen comedy series Sex Education, which lasted for four seasons.

“The story follows an idealistic young politician who juggles familial issues and a challenging work life while preparing to take over the job of her mentor, the state’s longtime incumbent governor,” reads the synopsis.

When is the Ella McCay release date?

Ella McCay is now scheduled to arrive in theaters on September 19, 2025, pitting it directly against Jordan Peele’s upcoming Him movie starring Marlon Wayans. The film will also be debuting in the same month as The Conjuring: Last Rites, Downton Abbey 3, The Bride!, and Saw XI.

The film is written and directed by James L. Brooks (Terms of Endearment). This marks Brooks’ feature directorial comeback after over a decade since 2010’s romantic comedy How Do You Know. The cast also includes Jamie Lee Curtis (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Woody Harrelson (True Detective), Ayo Edebiri (The Bear), Albert Brooks (Broadcast News), Kumail Nanjiani (Eternals), Jack Lowden (Slow Horses), Rebecca Hall (Godzilla x Kong), Spike Fearn (Aftersun), Erica McDermott (The Fighter), and Troy Garity (Barbershop). It is produced by Brooks, Julie Ansell, and Richard Saka, with Seth Meier serving as an executive producer. 20th Century has tapped Scott Aversano to oversee the project on behalf of the studio.
