Is TikTok back on the App Store and Google Play? After weeks of uncertainty due to legal battles and national security concerns, the popular social media platform’s status in the U.S. has shifted once again in its favor. However, the app’s future still remains complicated, leaving users and companies navigating a rapidly changing landscape.
Let’s explore the latest developments, the legal and political decisions behind them, and what this means for TikTok moving forward.
Is TikTok back on App Store and Google store?
Apple and Google have restored TikTok to their U.S. app stores as of Thursday evening, weeks after its removal due to a law banning the app in the United States.
President Donald Trump issued an executive order last month, pausing enforcement of the ban for 75 days, allowing the app’s return. Apple and Google reportedly waited for written guidance from the Justice Department, seemingly assuring them they would not face penalties for reinstating the app. (via New York Times)
President Joe Biden signed the ban in April 2024, requiring ByteDance to sell TikTok’s U.S. assets by January 19, 2025, due to national security concerns. However, the Supreme Court upheld the ban on January 17. TikTok resumed service after Trump’s pledge to extend the deadline and protect service providers from liability. TikTok thanked Trump for ensuring service for its 170 million U.S. users and 7 million small businesses.
But, Trump’s executive order caused confusion. Apple and Google delayed TikTok’s return, while Oracle resumed support after a brief shutdown. Trump suggested Elon Musk or Larry Ellison could buy TikTok, proposing “the United States of America own 50% of TikTok” (via USA Today). ByteDance insists it cannot sell the app due to China’s export restrictions on its algorithm.
As of February 14, ByteDance has around 50 days to sell its U.S. assets or face a renewed ban, with potential changes to TikTok’s algorithm and terms. TikTok executives seemed optimistic, but the app’s future is uncertain as Trump navigates legal steps for a sale or extension.
