An update has been given for Takashi Yamazaki’s new Godzilla movie.
Yamazaki directed Godzilla Minus One, which was released in United States theaters in December 2023. Despite being made for under $15 million, the movie was a massive hit and made over $110 million at the worldwide box office.
In addition to directing the film, Yamazaki also wrote the screenplay and served as the VFX supervisor on Godzilla Minus One. The movie won Best Visual Effects at the Academy Awards in March 2024.
It was announced in November 2024 that Toho is officially working on a new Godzilla movie. Yamazaki is once again returning to write, direct, and handle VFX duties.
What is the Godzilla Minus One 2 update?
Per Variety, Yamazaki recently confirmed at the Visual Effects Society Awards that he’s currently working on the screenplay and storyboards for the new Godzilla movie.
Yamazaki also said that this new Godzilla movie will have a bigger budget than Godzilla Minus One did, though an exact figure was not mentioned.
Plot details for Yamazaki’s new Godzilla movie remain under wraps at this time. Whether or not any characters from the 2023 movie return for the new film remains to be seen. A release date has not yet been announced.
Godzilla Minus One is currently streaming on Netflix. It stars yunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, and Kuranosuke Sasaki.
“In postwar Japan, Godzilla brings new devastation to an already scorched landscape. With no military intervention or government help in sight, the survivors must join together in the face of despair and fight back against an unrelenting horror,” the synopsis for the movie reads.
Yamazaki is also working on his first English-language film, Grandgear, which will be released via Sony Pictures. That movie, which will be produced by J.J. Abrams, also does not have a release date at this time.
