Having aired its first episode back in 1963, General Hospital currently finds itself in a bit of a slump. The long-running soap drama has amassed a dedicated fanbase over the years, much to the envy of its competitors. Still, the series has experienced a sharp drop in ratings in recent times. As such, General Hospital is currently running the risk of getting canceled, a whopping 62 years after its inception. But has there been any official word behind the proposed scrapping of the beloved soap?
Is General Hospital getting canceled in 2025?
At the time of writing, ABC has not relayed any statement regarding General Hospital getting canceled in 2025.
However, dwindling ratings and viewership suggest that such a development could take place if things don’t get fixed soon. The series infamously recorded just 1.8 million viewers between May 6 and May 10, 2024, making it the fourth consecutive week where General Hospital fell below the 2 million viewership mark. Moreover, the show’s reluctance to partner with a streaming platform, like The Bold and the Beautiful’s deal to air episodes on Peacock, has also contributed to its rapidly declining view count.
Additionally, fans have actively voiced their opinions against the abrupt cast changes, especially when the fan-favorite Kelly Monaco was dropped from the setup. The actress herself confessed that she was “blindsided” by the creators’ unexpected decision to get rid of her character. Monaco’s exit also led viewers to start a Change.org petition to bring her back, but to no avail.
Such discourse surrounding General Hospital has caused many to wonder if the show might just get canceled in 2025. A RadarOnline insider perfectly summarized the dire situation of the series in a November 2024 statement. “The soap’s been in trouble for a long time, and bosses are clearly scrambling to boost ratings while trimming the budget of cast members they think they don’t need,” the source’s comment read.
Regardless, ABC has not canceled General Hospital as of yet. As such, the soap continues to premiere new episodes, hoping to reclaim its former glory.
