Mavericks’ Daniel Gafford Suffers Knee Injury Against Kings

Despite their shocking decision to trade rising star Luka Dončić for veteran Anthony Davis, the Dallas Mavericks appear to be facing difficult times this season. In addition to their struggles on the court—including a narrow loss to the Sacramento Kings—Dallas is also dealing with a mounting injury crisis, with Daniel Gafford becoming the latest casualty. The 26-year-old center was forced to exit Monday’s game against Sacramento due to a knee injury, leaving fans wondering about the extent of his condition.

Here’s everything you need to know about the former Chicago Bulls player’s latest ailment.

What happened to Daniel Gafford?

Daniel Gafford suffered a sprained right knee during Monday’s game against the Kings, as reported by CBS Sports.

Gafford set a screen on Kings guard Malik Monk in the second quarter, but their knees collided near center court. He collapsed in pain and needed assistance to leave the floor. The Mavericks quickly ruled him out for the rest of the game.

This injury worsens Dallas’ frontcourt crisis. The team already lacks Anthony Davis (groin), Dereck Lively II (ankle stress fracture), and Dwight Powell (hip strain). Davis, who arrived in the blockbuster trade that sent Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers on Feb. 1, injured himself in his Dallas debut and will remain sidelined at least through the All-Star break.

At the time of writing, Dallas has not provided an update on the severity of Gafford’s injury or a potential return timeline. With all four of their primary big men sidelined, the Mavericks now face a significant challenge in maintaining their playoff position. They currently hold a 28-26 record, just one game ahead of the 11th-seeded Phoenix Suns in the competitive Western Conference.

Dallas will look to regroup as they prepare to take on the Golden State Warriors in their next game.
