In an anti-climactic turn of events for the Kansas City Chiefs, Andy Reid’s men failed to become the first NFL team to win the Super Bowl on three consecutive occasions after they lost the 2025 event to the Philadelphia Eagles. The unexpected defeat also opened the doors to retirement rumors for several of the Chiefs’ star players, including Travis Kelce. In a recent post-match conference, Patrick Mahomes finally addressed the speculations regarding his teammate’s future in the sport.
Here’s what Mahomes had to say about Travis Kelce’s much-discussed retirement.
What did Patrick Mahomes say about Travis Kelce’s retirement?
While talking to the reporters following his side’s 40-22 loss vs the Eagles in the 2025 Super Bowl, Patrick Mahomes indicated that Kelce could continue playing football for some time. “He’s given so much to this team and to the NFL. And he’s such a joy for not only me to work with but for people to watch, and so he knows he still has a lot of football left in him,” the Chiefs quarterback noted, as per Metro.
Nevertheless, Mahomes reiterated that Travis Kelce will always be the one to take the final call on his retirement. “I know he still has love for the game and he’ll get to spend some time with his family and make that decision on his own but he knows he’ll come back here with welcome arms and we love that guy,” he added.
Touted to take the Super Bowl title home, Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs faltered in front of an impeccable Eagles defense that surprisingly managed to keep an in-form Mahomes quiet. Due to the added pressure, the 29-year-old veteran lost a fumble, threw two interceptions, and was sacked six times as he failed to take his team over the line in what proved to be a one-sided clash.
Travis Kelce, 35, has yet to issue a public statement regarding his retirement.
