Why Is “Montoya Por Favor” Trending? Meaning Explained

Many are wondering where the Montoya Por Favor trend comes from and what it means. The meme has circulated widely on social media, particularly when it comes to sports, though its origins actually comes from a popular reality TV show in Spain. Here’s an explanation of the meaning of “Montoya. Por Favor” and how it’s being used.

What does Montoya Por Favor mean?

The meme “Montoya Por Favor” comes from an episode of “La Isla de las Tentaciones” (or “Temptation Island”), which is essentially the Spanish reality TV equivalent of “Love Island,” where couples are tested on their faithfulness on an island full of singles.

The host of the show, Sandra Barneda, pleadingly yells “Montoya, por favor!” (or “Montoya, please!” in English) multiple times at a contestant named José Carlos Montoya, who after watching his girlfriend Anita cheating on him with another man via television screen, frantically runs across the beach toward their room. In an earlier episode, Anita had watched a video of Montoya getting a lap dance, says that’s cheating in her book, and decided she wanted payback.

Since then, the “Montoya Por Favor” meme has come to describe moments where characters run quickly, typically in a panic or in anger. Clips of the episode began circulating on February 3, 2025 and quickly went viral. Soccer fans paired “Montoya por favor” to videos of their favorite players sprinting across the field and scoring a goal in incredible fashion.

The meme became popular enough that official sports channels began using it, like the US Open Tennis account posting a clip on X of an incredible winner made by a player that sprinted back and forth on defense.

Gaming accounts for Valorant, League of Legends, and even PlayStation France jumped in on the trend, splicing audio from the episode into their own spoofs.
