What is the live-action How to Train Your Dragon movie about?
“On the rugged isle of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies for generations, Hiccup (Mason Thames; The Black Phone, For All Mankind) stands apart. The inventive yet overlooked son of Chief Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler, reprising his voice role from the animated franchise), Hiccup defies centuries of tradition when he befriends Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon. Their unlikely bond reveals the true nature of dragons, challenging the very foundations of Viking society.”
The cast of the movie also includes Nico Parker as Astrid, Nick Frost as Gobber, Julian Dennison as Fishlegs, Gabriel Howell as Snotlout, Bronwyn James as Ruffnut, and Harry Trevaldwyn as Tuffnut.
The film is directed by Dean DeBlois, who co-directed the 2010 animated movie alongside Chris Sanders before then going on to helm 2014’s How to Train Your Dragon 2 and 2019’s How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World by himself. DeBlois and Sanders also co-directed 2002’s Lilo & Stitch together.
DeBlois also wrote the script for the movie and serves as a producer alongside Marc Platt and Adam Siegel. The How to Train Your Dragon movies are inspired by Cressida Cowell’s best-selling novel, which was published in 2003.
How to Train Your Dragon will be released in United States theaters on June 13, 2025, from Universal Pictures. It will also be released in IMAX.
