What happened to Ed Droste and Taylor Swift in 2015?

In 2015, Ed Droste took to what was then known as Twitter (now rebranded as X) and mentioned in a now-deleted tweet that he had met with an unnamed celebrity, whom he described as “terribly calculating and mean.” He also described the person exceeding all his expectations as being arrogant and rude. Although the celebrity was not named it was hinted to be Swift.

The ex-Grizzly Bear member, however, soon expressed fear for his words reaching the person. He begged fans to not tag the person on Twitter and let them know of the tweets criticizing them. He pointed out that he was terrified of the person’s “insane power,” and wished to express “disgust.” (via BBC)

However, the fan backlash only began after he had put up another also now-deleted tweet about a gossip magazine. This magazine claimed that Swift had enforced strict rules on her friends for her Hyde Park concert. “Obsessed that people are catching on,” he had captioned the tweet.

A fan took note of this and criticized Droste, telling him not to hate her and that nobody was perfect. In response, Droste confirmed that Swift was the person he talked about in his earlier tweet. He said that she was allowed to get away with being terrible to people and that he had “first-hand experience” in the matter.

He later added, “I want to just put out there that I’ve always known Taylor Swift was [as] immensely evil as she is powerful.”

Droste had also put out other tweets calling Swift a “monster” and begging people to not indulge her fame. He also claimed that he was “treated like s—.” However, fans continued to criticize him. The situation eventually escalated to the point that the Haim sisters, close friends with Swift, unfollowed him. Droste deleted his Twitter account soon after. (via Stereogum)
