Exclusive 40 Watts From Nowhere Trailer Previews Pirate Radio Documentary

ComingSoon is debuting an exclusive 40 Watts From Nowhere trailer, previewing the upcoming documentary about pirate radio from acclaimed journalist and former pirate radio personality Susan Carpenter.

What happens in the 40 Watts From Nowhere trailer?

The 40 Watts From Nowhere trailer breaks down the history of pirate radio, as well as the Los Angeles pirate radio station KBLT and the 1990s low-power FM movement in the U.S. The film is based on various vintage footage that was taken in 1998, showcasing the operation of KBLT, which was run out of an apartment closet in Silver Lake.

40 Watts From Nowhere is set to have its world premiere on February 22, 2025, at the LUMIX Theatre at Quixote Studios West as part of the upcoming Slamdance Film Festival 2025. Following that, the film will also be available virtually on Slamdance’s website from February 24 to March 7, 2025.

40 Watts From Nowhere is directed by Susan Carpenter, who started the 40-watt FM station in 1995 and founded KBLT as an aspiring journalist. She worked as a journalist for 30 years in Los Angeles, with half of her career spent at the Los Angeles Times. Outside of that, she’s also contributed to places like the New York Times, Marketplace Radio, National Public Radio, and more. Currently, she works as a national digital journalist for Spectrum News.

“40 Watts From Nowhere is a documentary about Los Angeles pirate radio station KBLT and the 1990s low-power FM movement in the U.S.,” reads the film’s official synopsis. “It’s based around vintage footage shot in 1998 that shows KBLT operating 24/7 out of an apartment closet in Silver Lake with DJs running the gamut from Keith Morris (Circle Jerks), Mike Watt (Minutemen), and Don Bolles (Germs) to garden-variety music fans playing everything from jungle and punk to vintage country and French pop.”
