Back to the Future co-creator and writer Bob Gale had a strong message for fans hoping for a fourth entry in the iconic sci-fi film series.
What did Bob Gale say about a Back to the Future 4 possibility?
Speaking backstage at the Saturn Awards after receiving the George Pal Memorial Award (via Yahoo Entertainment), Gale — who co-wrote all three Back to the Future films with filmmaker Robert Zemeckis — wasted no time in shooting down any potential ideas of a fourth movie, and had strong words for anyone who kept asking him about a Back to the Future 4.
“People always say, ‘When are you going to do ‘Back to the Future 4’ and we say, ‘F— you,’” Gale said, before mentioning the Back to the Future-inspired Broadway musical that is currently on tour across the world. “So, my God, ‘Back to the Future,’ I’m going to be doing it for the rest of my life.”
Gale’s comments, while a bit harsher than those of Robert Zemeckis, do echo what the filmmaker said during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast last year, when he noted that a fourth film just “isn’t in the cards.”
“You know, we have to say, ‘There are different things that might work.’ Something like that, you know? But to remake the movie or to suggest that there’s a ‘Back to the Future 4,’ it just isn’t in the cards,” Zemeckis said. “I would like to do the ‘Back to the Future: The Musical’ [movie]. I would love to do that. I think that would be great. I floated that out to the folks at Universal. They don’t get it. So, [there’s] nothing I can do.”
