Netflix Distancing Itself from Emilia Perez Star Karla Sofía Gascón Amid Controversial Posts

As Oscar campaign season continues to roll on, a new report from Variety notes that Netflix has begun distancing itself from Emilia Perez star Karla Sofía Gascón in the wake of her string of controversial comments that popped up recently.

According to Variety’s report, Gascón was set to make appearances at a litany of award shows this week leading up to the Academy Awards on March 2, 2025, including an AFI Awards luncheon, the Critics Choice Awards, the Directors Guild of America Awards, and the Producers Guild of America Awards, as well a stop at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

However, the report notes that Gascón is now no longer expected to be at any of them, and furthermore, should she want to, Variety reports that Netflix will not be paying for the actress to attend, nor covering any expenses for styling or travel. Instead, Gascón would have to pay for her own travel to the show, and cover her own expenses.

Variety’s report also mentions that Gascón’s public relations firm, The Lede Company, has stopped talking directly to the actress, and are only communicating via her United Talent Agency representative. The controversial statements from Gascón have also thrown doubt over whether or not Emilia Perez will continue to be the favorite that it was going into the Oscars just a few weeks ago.

What is the Karla Sofía Gascón controversy?

Earlier this month, past comments from Gascón surfaced, where the actress commented on the murder of George Floyd in 2020, as well as things like the Muslim population in her native Spain, and even commenting on Christopher Columbus and statues of him being taken down in certain places.

“Let me get this straight, a guy tries to pass off a counterfeit bill after consuming methamphetamine, an idiot policeman arrives and goes too far in arresting him, killing him, ruining the lives of his family and his colleagues, and turning the guy with the bill into a martyr hero,” Gascón wrote in a tweet in 2020 (via THR). “I truly believe that very few people ever cared about George Floyd, a drug addict and a hustler, but his death has served to highlight once again that there are those who still consider Black people to be monkeys without rights and those who consider the police to be murderers. All wrong.”

Gascón also previously mentioned the Muslim population in Spain growing, saying that Islam goes “against European values and violate human rights” and should be banned, and also taking umbrage with the fact that more Muslim people were entering Spain.

“Sorry, is it just my impression or are there more and more Muslims in Spain? Every time I go to pick up my daughter from school there are more women with their hair covered and their skirts down to their heels,” she posted Nov. 23, 2020. “Maybe next year instead of English we’ll have to teach Arabic.”
