Buffy the Vampire Slayer Sequel Series With Sarah Michelle Gellar Close to Receiving Pilot

A Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel series is close to receiving a pilot order at Hulu.

Created by Joss Whedon, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is the iconic supernatural drama series that is based on the 1992 movie of the same name. It stars Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, Nicholas Brendon as Xander Harris, and Alyson Hannigan as Willow Rosenberg.

Per Variety, Hulu is now close to approving a pilot order for a Buffy the Vampire sequel series.

Gellar is believed to be in “final talks” to reprise her role in the new show, which does not yet have a title; although, the show will reportedly “focus on a new Slayer and Gellar would appear in a recurring role rather than leading the series.”

Further plot details beyond that remain under wraps at this time.

What else do we know about the Buffy the Vampire sequel series?

Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman are both attached to write, executive produce, and showrun the new show. Chloé Zhao is also attached to direct and executive produce through her Book of Shadows production banner, while Gellar, Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, Kaz Kuzi, and Dolly Parton will also be executive producers.

20th Television and Searchlight Television are producing the project.

Whedon, who was accused of making a “toxic workplace” on the set of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, via a 2021 article published by Variety, is not expected to return.

There was already one Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin-off television series, Angel, that premiered in 1999. It ran for five seasons, with the show ending in 2004. Whedon also created Angel, which starred David Boreanaz as the titular character, Charisma Carpenter as Cordelia Chase, and Alexis Denisof as Wesley Wyndam-Pryce.

Both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel are currently available to stream on Hulu at this time.
