Katy Perry expressed her belief that Carrie Underwood, who will fill in for her in her old spot, will do a fantastic job as a judge.
“She was born on that show,” Perry told People. “I think she knows how to steer it.” The “Roar” singer noted that since Underwood was a former contestant on the show herself, having won the fourth season back in 2005, she will have a unique perspective when it comes to judging contestants.
“As artists, we’ve been in some sort of their shoes, but she has lived every single day,” Perry added. “So I think she’s going to have a lot to offer anyone that’s willing to listen.”
Carrie Underwood herself echoed this sentiment during an interview with Good Morning America where she said that due to having seen “both sides of the coin,” she could provide contestants “some insight” and a “different viewpoint” from the other judges.
However, she also jokingly admitted that she would face a “big problem” of “being very honest,” but expressed her hopes to be able to offer encouragement and constructive criticism.
Perry first announced her departure from American Idol in February 2024, during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Here, she cited her wishes to travel the world and focus on making new music as key reasons for her departure. However, she did not rule out a future return to the singing competition reality series.
