Miami Heats’ Terry Rozier Under Investigation in Sports Betting Probe

Terry Rozier, who currently plays for the Miami Heat, is being investigated for allegedly participating in a sports betting scandal. The allegations are connected to a game in which Rozier played against the New Orleans Pelicans in 2023. The investigation is being carried out under a federal probe which also led to the lifetime ban on the Toronto Raptors’ Jontay Porter. Here are all the details about the investigation.

Terry Rozier under investigation for illegal betting

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, an investigation into Miami Heat point guard Terry Rozier’s alleged involvement in illegal sports betting is currently underway. The investigation is related to a March 2023 game against the Pelicans. At that time, Rozier was playing for the Charlotte Hornets, before joining Miami in January 2024.

During the game, Rozier was present on the court for approximately 9 minutes and 36 seconds. After reporting that he was facing difficulties with his foot, Rozier didn’t return to play the match and was also out for the rest of the season. The match came to the attention of sports fans because Rozier was not listed on the Hornets’ injury report.

The bets made on Rozier during that match were reported to be inconsistent by the sports integrity monitoring firm US Integrity to NBA. Following this, many sportsbooks pulled back from registering any more bets for the player. As of now, Rozier has not been found guilty of any wrongdoing.

Furthermore, the NBA has pledged to assist the prosecutors in the investigation. In a statement, Mike Bass, a spokesperson for the NBA said, “The league conducted an investigation and did not find a violation of NBA rules. We are now aware of an investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York related to this matter and have been cooperating with that investigation.”

Additionally, Rozier’s attorney told The Wall Street Journal, “We are aware of the NBA’s 2023 investigation which determined there was absolutely no wrongdoing by Mr. Rozier and we are confident that the on-going government investigation will arrive at the exact same conclusion.”
