Billy Crystal & Meg Ryan Return in When Harry Met Sally-Themed Super Bowl Ad

With the Super Bowl just two weeks ago, ads for the big game have slowly begun popping up, including one from Hellmann’s mayonnaise, which sees Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan returning to the location of their iconic When Harry Met Sally scene.

What happens in the Super Bowl ad?

The new commercial sees Crystal and Ryan reprising their roles as Sally Albright and Harry Burns inside of New York City’s iconic Katz’s deli, where the pair are eating a sandwich. Ryan spreads some Hellmann’s mayo on the sandwich and, just like in the classic 1989 movie, has a very over the top reaction to it, to which Billy Crystal jokes about this one “being real.”

The commercial was officially debuted at Katz’s Deli this week, and there, the spot’s director Jake Szymanski said that he learned that it was the first time both actors had been back to the location since they filmed the movie in 1989.

“They both said they hadn’t been back inside Katz’s since they shot the scene, and so we got to be there for the moment when they both walked on set,” said Szymanski (via THR). “They also hadn’t seen each other in a couple years. So we got to see them walk back into this place, and the memories flood back, and they start remembering and sharing stories and talking about what it was like to film that day.”

The commercial also sees a brief cameo from Sydney Sweeney, who utters the infamous “I’ll have what she’s having” line to close out the commercial. Szymanski said that, since Sweeney is emerging as one of the bigger rom-com stars of the generation, it made sense for it to be her.

“There was some talk early on about ‘who are we gonna get for the cameo role? Who’s gonna end the spot?’ It’s such an iconic line, and When Harry Met Sally is such an iconic rom-com and a moment for Meg, obviously, that we’re recreating,” Szymanski said. “And I kind of like that Sydney is emerging as this new rom-com star… so I like that it was kind of like a mini passing of the torch to the next generation to have her at the end.”
