Turbo Overkill PS5 Review: Fast-Paced Shooter Provides Bloody Fun

Porting a frenetic first-person shooter from PC to console is always tricky since no matter how good you are with a controller, you can never get the same quickness and accuracy as using a mouse and keyboard. Luckily, Trigger Happy Interactive’s Turbo Overkill, which is published quite appropriately by Apogee Entertainment, has made the leap without becoming a lesser experience. Turbo Overkill PS5 includes all of the fast-paced gunplay you’d want from the stylish cyberpunk shooter.

The opening moments of Turbo Overkill make a great impression as you’re immediately introduced to the protagonist, Johnny Turbo, who has a chainsaw leg. While that may seem less than optimal in real life, it’s a godsend in the game as you’re able to quickly slide on the ground and slice through enemies with your chainsaw. This makes your movement and mobility just as dangerous as your weaponry — which expands into over 15 rad weapons over the campaign. It also allows for aggressive, offensive play as you don’t have to constantly be running away from mobs of enemies as you can literally mow them down.

My initial worries for the Turbo Overkill PS5 port was that it would be difficult to keep up with the game on a controller. That wasn’t the case, though, and a major credit is due to the game’s use of aim assist, which manages to straddle the line of being incredibly helpful without getting in the way or making it feel like the game lacks skill. It’s a really difficult balance to strike, and I usually dislike it in shooters, but it all comes together as a necessary option to keep the game at full speed.

I mentioned mobility earlier and that becomes one of the game’s strongest suits. Eventually, you’re using a grappling hook to swing around as if you’re Spider-Man and running across walls as well. Not since Titanfall have I had this much fun just simply moving around in an FPS. This isn’t a boomer shooter that is tied to the past, like a lot of the retro-inspired indies I quite enjoy, this is one looking to move the genre forward. You also get a number of augmentations and upgrades over time, really turning yourself into a full-fledged killing machine.

There’s also a ton of replayability in Turbo Overkill PS5. There are five difficulty settings for the campaign, which will really test your abilities, plus secret levels, an endless mode, and an arcade mode. The latter two modes bring a scoring system into play, so this is truly a game that you get more out of as you put more in.

Turbo Overkill PS5 Review: Final Verdict

The Turbo Overkill PS5 port brings one of the best first-person shooters in recent memories to consoles in a great fashion. The game doesn’t miss a beat as you’ll be sliding, grappling, and shooting your way through hordes of foes with a smile on your face. It’s a stylish and bloody romp that makes the most of its cyberpunk theme.

SCORE: 8.5/10

As ComingSoon’s review policy explains, a score of 8.5 equates to “Great.” While there are a few minor issues, this score means that the art succeeds at its goal and leaves a memorable impact.
