Producer Issa Rae hopes One of Them Days will prove there’s demand for Black stories
Issa Rae recently spoke to The Wrap about One of Them Days. During the interview, Rae expressed her hopes for the movie to accelerate the demand for more Black stories.
Speaking about the difficulties of meeting the expectations of “studio standards” and making sure the film would be popular, Issa Rae stated that she believes that the success of One of Them Days would “prove that there is a demand for these type of movies.”
Speaking further about studio expectations, she added, “And then the onus, of course, being Black filmmakers and also having Black female leads is that, if it doesn’t do well, they’ll be, like, ‘We tried X’ and so that’s the unfair part of it.”
According to a report by Variety, Universal Pictures’ Wolf Man was predicted to take the number one spot at the domestic box office over the past weekend. However, the film came in third beneath Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King, which regained the number one spot over the long weekend, and One of Them Days, which made back its production budget with a surprisingly large opening of $14.2 million. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has received a rating of 95 percent on the Tomatometer based on 65 reviews and 92 percent on the Popcornmeter.
The story revolves around two best friends played by SZA and Keke Palmer as they navigate their way through a possible eviction from their home and try to save their friendship.
