Viewers are curious to know why Marissa Cooper, portrayed by Mischa Barton, left the Fox drama series, The O.C. Introduced in Season 1, Marissa was a key character who was rebellious, risk-taking, and wealthy. She was emotionally distant from her mother but was close to her father. Her tumultuous romantic storyline with Ryan Atwood (Ben McKenzie) was a popular discussion among fans. However, her arc was closed off by Season 3, and here’s the reason why.
Here’s why Mischa Barton’s Marissa Cooper left The OC
The show’s creator, Josh Schwartz, had always planned for Barton’s character, Marissa, to be written out. Additionally, Barton felt that Marissa’s story was complete and was satisfied with her demise storyline.
In a 2006 interview, Barton revealed she was “excited” about her character’s demise, considering it to be a suitable conclusion to her arc. Reflecting on the write-off decision, she said, “I’ve done pretty much everything else with the character. It was better than one of those lame farewells.” (via Digital Spy)
At the time, several rumors teased that Barton wished to leave the show. However, they seem untrue. Her character’s ending was predetermined and an entirely creative choice made by the showrunners.
Marissa Cooper officially bid adieu to the show in the Season 3 finale, titled “The Graduates.” The episode features Marissa and Ryan, former lovers-turned-good friends, processing the sadness of going separate ways after their high school ends. Meanwhile, Kevin makes a reckless decision to drive his car while intoxicated. He does the unthinkable. His car bumps into that of Marissa and Ryan’s.
After the incident, both appear unconscious but Ryan wakes up, only to see Marissa in a brutal condition. He pulls her out of the car seat and takes her in arms, as the car explodes in the background. However, Marissa doesn’t make it. She dies in her former lover’s embrace, marking her story’s conclusion for once and all.
