Starbucks Gets Mixed Reaction for Reversing Open Door Policy

Starbucks has decided to reverse its long-standing open-door policy. The new code of conduct unveiled by the multinational coffeehouse chain has received mixed reactions from users on social media. Here is everything that’s been revealed about the open-door policy reversal by Starbucks and what internet users have had to say about it.

Starbucks reversing open door policy explained

Starbucks recently announced that it will reverse its open-door policy. The policy that was put into effect in 2018 dictated that anyone would be allowed to hang out at a Starbucks coffeehouse and use the restroom without making a purchase. However, the company is now getting rid of this policy.

Starbucks has released a new code of conduct on its website. It states that a person will now have to buy something at Starbucks to access its facilities. They stated in the press release, “We want to ensure our spaces are prioritized for use by our customers. Our Coffeehouse Code of Conduct is something most retailers have and is designed to provide clarity that our spaces – including our cafes, patios and restrooms – are for use by customers and partners.”

A representative from Starbucks, Jaci Anderson, gave a statement on the policy reversal. Anderson said, “We want everyone to feel welcome and comfortable in our stores. By setting clear expectations for behavior and use of our spaces, we can create a better environment for everyone.” Furthermore, Anderson stated that the new code of conduct will help the company to “prioritize our paying customers who want to sit and enjoy our cafes or need to use the restroom.”

Reacting to this change, a user on X (Twitter) criticized it and wrote, “This is an absolute terrible and greedy decision to make. People used to go in there all the time to just study. Starbucks, you are already on thin ice. Way to put yourself on thinner.” Additionally, another user had a different view on the policy reversal. They posted, “To the people upset at this change, just buy something and you can hang out or whatever. It’s Starbucks not a library.”
