Deion Sanders Addresses Cowboys Coaching Rumors After Mike McCarthy Exit

Wondering if Deion Sanders will make a surprise return to the Dallas Cowboys — this time as head coach? The iconic former cornerback and current Colorado coach has sparked buzz after a conversation with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. With the team’s coaching position vacant and Sanders’ name in the mix, could “Coach Prime” be on the verge of a historic NFL move?

Let’s break down the ongoing discussions and what it means for the future of the Cowboys.

Will Deion Sanders coach Dallas Cowboys?

The Dallas Cowboys have begun their search for a new head coach following their decision to part ways with Mike McCarthy after a 7-10 season in 2024.

One of the prominent names linked to the vacancy is former Cowboys player and current Colorado head coach Deion Sanders. According to a report from Fox Sports, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and Sanders spoke on Monday, though no formal interview has been scheduled yet.

Sanders confirmed the conversation during an interview with ESPN’s Adam Schefter, stating, “To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it’s intriguing. I love Jerry and believe in Jerry. After you hang up and process it, and think about it, it’s intriguing. But I love Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body, and the community.”

While Sanders expressed appreciation for the interest from the Cowboys, he has publicly maintained his commitment to Colorado. In November, when asked about potential NFL opportunities, Sanders said, “I’m happy where I am, man. I’ve got a kickstand down. You know what a kickstand is? … That means I’m resting. I’m good, I’m happy, I’m excited. I’m enthusiastic about where I am. I love it here, truly do.”

Deion Sanders, currently Colorado’s head coach, holds a 13-12 record over two seasons, including a 9-4 run in 2024 and coaching Heisman winner Travis Hunter. He signed a five-year, $29.5 million contract with Colorado in late 2022.

The Cowboys, after parting ways with Mike McCarthy, have begun their head coach search. Jerry Jones confirmed speaking with Sanders, though no interview has been scheduled. Per the NFL’s Rooney Rule, Dallas must interview two external minority candidates. Talks with Sanders remain preliminary, and the Cowboys’ next head coach has not been decided.
