Is There a The Lion King 3 Release Date & Is It Coming Out?

Following the release of Mufasa: The Lion King in theaters, which continues to triumph at the box office, fans are curious about whether the film, made as both a prequel and sequel, will get a successor. Has The Lion King 3 been confirmed? Will it get a release date?

Here’s all the information on the release date of The Lion King 3 so far.

Is there a The Lion King 3 release date?

The Lion King 3 does not have an official release date, but it will likely be announced in the future.

As of writing, Disney has not confirmed a sequel/successor to Mufasa: The Lion King.

However, the film does seem to set up a follow-up story in its present-day storyline. The present-day storyline introduces Simba’s young daughter, Kiara. Kiara assumes the mantle of the protagonist in the 1998 animated film The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride. This film is a sequel to 1994’s The Lion King. In this film, Kiara develops a romance with Kovu, who belongs to a tribe loyal to Scar. This romance later becomes the key to uniting Kiara and Kovu’s tribes as Kovu ultimately turns on his villainous mother and Scar fanatic Zira.

As such, a potential The Lion King 3 could adapt Kiara and Kovu’s story.

Alternatively, The Lion King 3 could also choose to focus on Simba and Nala’s newborn son introduced at Mufasa: The Lion King’s tail-end. Their son, Kion, served as the protagonist of The Lion Guard animated television series. Thus, The Lion King 3 could adapt elements from The Lion Guard’s story.

Where is The Lion King 3 coming out?

The Lion King 3 will come out in theaters if it gets confirmed.

This is because the first two The Lion King films dropped in theaters before they were made/will be made available on streaming platforms.

Mufasa: The Lion King is currently playing in theaters. The main cast comprises Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Tiffany Boone, Kagiso Lediga, Preston Nyman, and Mads Mikkelsen. Blue Ivy Carter, John Kani, Seth Rogen, and Billy Eichner round out the supporting cast.
