What happened to Emmanuel and Hostin Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine?
Dr. Emmanuel “Manny” Hostin is entangled in a high-profile federal lawsuit accusing him of insurance fraud.
The orthopedic surgeon and his practice, Hostin Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, are among other defendants named in a $450 million RICO case. It is brought forward by the American Transit Insurance Company. The allegations claim Hostin performed unnecessary surgeries and submitted fraudulent claims in exchange for kickbacks disguised as dividends or other payments. The lawsuit highlights incidents where Hostin’s patients underwent arthroscopic surgeries following minor car accidents. However, injuries were deemed too minimal to justify such procedures.
Despite the accusations, Hostin’s legal team has vehemently denied all charges. They called the lawsuit “meritless” and a desperate attempt by the insurance company to dodge its financial obligations. Hostin’s attorney also accused American Transit of abusing the legal system to intimidate healthcare providers. Hostin’s lawyer said, “It is meant to intimidate and harass doctors from collecting for care given to American Transit insureds and their passengers. The real story here is about an insurance carrier abusing the legal system to limit and restrict health care benefits to its insureds and their passengers and write off its proper obligations.” (via The Daily Mail)
Sunny Hostin has recently spoken about her husband’s challenges as a medical professional. She emphasized his commitment to treating patients despite systemic obstacles within the insurance industry. Married since 1998, the couple shares two children and reside in New York.
