Aubrey Plaza has issued a statement regarding the passing of her husband Jeff Baena.
On January 3, 2025, Baena passed away at age 47. The L.A. County Coroner’s Office has determined the cause of death to be suicide. Plaza, along with the Baena/Stern family, has now shared an official statement regarding Jeff’s passing.
What statement did Aubrey Plaza give about Jeff Baena’s passing?
“This is an unimaginable tragedy,” it reads. “We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support. Please respect our privacy during this time.”
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Baena is survived by Plaza; his mother, Barbara Stern; stepfather, Roger Stern; father, Scott Baena; stepmother, Michele Baena; brother, Brad Baena; stepsister, Bianca Gabay; and stepbrother, Jed Fluxman. Plaza and Baena were married in 2021.
Baena wrote the screenplay for 2004’s I Heart Huckabees, which stars Dustin Hoffman and Lily Tomlin, with David O. Rusell. He was also an uncredited writer on 2004’s Meet the Fockers, which is the Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro-starring sequel to 2000’s Meet the Parents.
Baena then made his feature film directorial debut in 2014 with Life After Beth, which starred Plaza alongside Dane DeHaan, John C. Reilly, and Molly Shannon. He went on to direct 2016’s Joshy, which was shown in the U.S. Dramatic Competition section of the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and stars Thomas Middleditch, and 2017’s The Litte Hours, a medieval black comedy with Alison Brie and Dave Franco. Plaza had roles in both Joshy and The Little Hours.
Following that, Baena made 2020’s Horse Girl, which again starred Brie. He followed that up with 2022’s Spin Me Round, which he co-wrote with Brie. Brie played the lead role of Amber in that movie alongside Alessandro Nivola, while Plaza starred as a supporting character named Kat.
ComingSoon sends condolences to Baena’s family and friends at this time.
