Rian Johnson Prepping ‘Original Sci-Fi’ Movie, May Not Return to Netflix

Rian Johnson has reportedly found his next film and may be ready to move on from his relationship with Netflix, according to a new report from The InSneider’s Jeff Sneider.

Sneider’s report notes that Johnson — who released the Knives Out sequel Glass Onion and whose Knives Out 3 will be released on Netflix — may not return to Netflix after the release of his threequel. Information about Johnson’s next collaboration is unknown as of this time, but Sneider’s report did note that Johnson has begun work on his next project already.

What do we know about Rian Johnson’s next movie?

According to the report, Johnson’s next movie will be “an original sci-fi project,” and Johnson could begin shopping it around to studios in the coming months. Sneider also mentioned Johnson’s relationship with Warner Bros. Discovery, noting that Johnson’s T-Street production banner signed a two-movie deal with the company earlier this year.

For Johnson, the world of sci-fi is no stranger. The director broke out into superstardom after directing the 2012 sci-fi action thriller Looper and would then go on to direct 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, a divisive film set in a sci-fi world. In 2019, Johnson directed the critically acclaimed murder mystery movie Knives Out and its sequel, Glass Onion, released in 2022. A third film in the franchise, Wake Up Dead Man, is set to release in 2025.

Outside of film, Johnson also created the hit crime comedy-drama television series Poker Face for Peacock. The series, starring Natasha Lyonne, earned massive praise and also saw Lyonne get a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for her work. The series was renewed for a second season in 2023, which is presumably in the works now.
