The Bone Temple Release Date Set for 28 Years Later Sequel

Sony Pictures has announced The Bone Temple release date for the next installment to its planned 28 Years Later trilogy. The date announcement comes ahead of 28 Years Later’s theatrical debut on June 20, 2025.

When is The Bone Temple’s release date?

The Bone Temple has now officially been scheduled to make its debut in theaters on January 16, 2026. The sequel will be directed by The Marvels’ Nia DaCosta from a screenplay written by Alex Garland. Further details about the 2026 sequel’s plot are still under wraps.

28 Years Later is directed by Danny Boyle from a screenplay written by Civil War’s Alex Garland. The ensemble cast also includes Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, and Erin Kellyman, with Oscar winner Cillian Murphy reprising his role from the 2002 movie. According to Sony Pictures chairman, Murphy’s character will return “in a surprising way and in a way that grows.” The film is produced by Garland, Boyle, Andrew Macdonald, Peter Rice, and Bernie Bellew, with Murphy also serving as an executive producer.

“It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected,” The 28 Years Later’s official synopsis reads. “One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.”
