It was a creative decision by showrunners to kill off Hofer’s Dex in General Hospital. This led to his sudden exit.
In a conversation with TV Insider, Hofer detailed about his exit being pre-planned by the creators and how none of his cast members knew about it. Firstly, he asked executive producer, Frank Valentini, whether or not they are planning a “cool death” for Hex. At first, Valentini was uncertain but eventually, Hofer got the cool ending he expected.
Expressing his mixed reactions on his exit, he said, “I really fell in love with Dex over the last three years. I told my mom it was almost like mourning the loss of a friend. He was such an incredible guy, and I wanted all these wonderful things for him, and he got to experience a lot of those wonderful things.” Although he was sad to conclude his character, he was extremely grateful to have the opportunity to play him.
In the previous episode, Dex and Lauren get involved in a group of brawling drunk footballers to end their fight. After this, Lauren goes after the escaped footballers, while Dex heads to the alley to pour out the alcohol bottles. However, Dex doesn’t know that a stranger is standing behind him in the alley.
