Andrew Garfield on Why He’s Glad Jacob Elordi Replaced Him in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein

Andrew Garfield says that, while he’s “of course disappointed” that he didn’t get to star in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein movie, he’s also “very, very glad” that he was replaced by Jacob Elordi.

Del Toro is currently working on a new Frankenstein movie for Netflix. Garfield was originally tapped to play Frankenstein’s monster in the film; however, he had to drop out of the project in early 2024 due to scheduling conflicts related to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.

Elordi will now play Frankenstein’s monster in the movie, while Oscar Isaac is playing Victor Frankenstein. The cast further includes Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, Charles Dance, Ralph Ineson, Felix Kammerer, and more.

Speaking at the Red Sea Studio, via Deadline, Garfield explained why he’s glad that the role ultimately went to Elordi.

What did Andrew Garfield say about Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi?

“I’m very, very glad that it was him doing it and I am of course disappointed that I didn’t get to do it because I love Guillermo, I love Oscar [Isaac] and everyone that he assembled so I was disappointed,” he said. “But meeting Jacob felt really serendipitous so that I could really see and hear that maybe he needed that experience more than me.”

The synopsis for Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein reads, “Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro adapts Mary Shelley’s classic tale of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.”

Along with the aforementioned cast, the movie stars Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, and Christian Convery.

An exact release date for Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein has not yet been announced by Netflix, though the movie is expected to arrive at some point in 2025.
