Kraven the Hunter Reviews Lead to Abysmal Rotten Tomatoes & Metacritic Scores

After being criticized for its lackluster storyline in its early reviews, the Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic scores of Sony’s Kraven the Hunter have arrived following its release on December 12, 2024. Featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the main lead, the movie follows the story of Sergei Kravinoff, who has a complicated relationship with his father, Nikolai Kravinoff, played by Russell Crowe. This leads to him seeking a new identity and becoming the titular character.

Kraven the Hunter’s reviews call it a ‘self-inflicted killshot’

After getting delayed multiple times for around two years, Kraven the Hunter finally hit theaters across the United States on December 12. However, the movie has failed to have a positive impact on movie critics, who called the movie out for its underwhelming performance in their reviews.

Although Coming Soon‘s Jonathan Sim lauded the movie for making the bold choice of going R-rated, he stated that Kraven the Hunter still suffers from pacing issues. He wrote in his review, “The pacing in the first and second acts can be sluggish at times. The movie is only fun when the action kicks in because the dialogue scenes are a drag.”

On the other hand, David Fear of Rolling Stone in his review asserted that Kraven the Hunter didn’t have “much reason to exist”. Fear said the movie’s script “felt messed with and doctored up in all of the wrong ways.” He further stated that Kraven the Hunter is “undoubtedly a self-inflicted killshot” by Sony.

Additionally, David Ehrlich of IndieWire aimed at the CGI of the movie and said that it “devolves from ‘adorably cartoonish’ to ‘done as cheaply as possible by a studio trying to cut its losses.'”

Kraven’s Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic scores are as bad as Morbius

According to Rotten Tomatoes, Kraven the Hunter, based on 56 reviews, earned a disappointing score of 14%, marking one of the lowest scores for movies from Sony Spider-Man Universe. On the other hand, the movie received a score of 33 based on 24 reviews on Metacritic.

These scores are similar to that of Morbius, another movie based on a Spider-Man villain by Sony. Following its release in 2022, Morbius scored 17% on Rotten Tomatoes (via IndieWire). Notably, the movie currently has a 15% rating on the Tomatometer and a score of 35 on Metacritic.
