The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has recently reported that they are sending refunds of more than $72 million to users who fell victim to Epic Games’ unlawful billings.
The developer was found violating children’s privacy law and changing default privacy settings to rack up unwanted purchases from users. FTC alleged that the game maker employed “counterintuitive, inconsistent, and confusing button configuration” to make young gamers make purchases via a single button click, with no parental guidance involved.
In 2022, FTC declared that Epic Games would be paying a total of $275 million as a penalty along with $245 million in refunds to resolve the allegations. On December 9, 2024, a new update from FTC states that they will be sending a total of 629,344 payments as part of its first round. The payments will be made via PayPal as well as checks. An average individual payment is around $114. Additionally, the FTC advises the recipients to redeem their PayPal payment within 30 days. Users who have opted for checks can cash in within 90 days.
