A theatrical rerelease date for Sing Sing has been announced.
Directed by Greg Kwedar, Sing Sing was released in United States theaters in July 2024. The movie stars Colman Domingo and Paul Raci alongside a number of men who were formerly incarcerated in real life.
The movie originally premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, where it was acquired by A24.
On December 2, 2024, Sing Sing proved it could be a major contender at the Oscars this year as it won a number of accolades — including Outstanding Lead Performance (Domingo), Outstanding Supporting Performance (Clarence Maclin), and Social Justice Tribute — at the Gotham Awards.
When is Sing Sing’s theatrical rerelease date?
Per Variety, A24 has now decided to put Sing Sing back in United States theaters nationwide on January 17, 2024.
“A24 released the picture on July 12,” Variety’s article notes. “However, despite the months that have passed since its debut, the indie studio refrained from releasing it digitally or on other streaming platforms. The movie is viewed as a serious Oscars contender.”
The synopsis for Sing Sing reads, “Divine G (Colman Domingo), imprisoned at Sing Sing for a crime he didn’t commit, finds purpose by acting in a theatre group with other incarcerated men. When a wary outsider joins the group, the men decide to stage their first original comedy, in this stirring true story of resilience, humanity, and the transformative power of art, starring an unforgettable ensemble cast of formerly incarcerated actors.”
Maclin told Variety about the movie, “It has the power to change one’s perception of who they are in relationship to the world and how they can contribute. It’s not designed to create actors, it’s designed to create human beings who can better contribute to society.”
The nominations for the 97th Oscars will be announced on Friday, January 17, 2025.
