Anthony Mackie Details Sam Wilson’s Evolution as a Superhero

Anthony Mackie thinks Sam Wilson will be a much different superhero in the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World, and recently detailed the character’s growth.

What did Anthony Mackie say about Sam Wilson?

Speaking at the Disney APAC Content Showcase in Brazil (via Deadline), Mackie opened up about the growth that his character has undergone over the course of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When it comes to how Wilson will handle the mantle of being Captain America, Mackie thinks he’ll retain a lot of who he was beforehand.

“Sam’s evolution is simple. He’s still a counselor,” said Mackie. “He’s still serving soldiers, but at the same time, now he’s a leader of his community in the country.”

Mackie also noted that, without any super soldier serum inside of him, Wilson will have to be a bit more careful in how he approaches things, and be smarter in fighting enemies.

“It’s very different with the serum — you can fight anybody,” said Mackie. “When you don’t have the serum, you have to be smart and engineer different ways of defeating [enemies]. With Sam, him being a counselor, he uses more of his brains than brawn. He uses more of his wit than his fist. He’s more of a friend to everyone.”

In addition to Mackie, Brave New World is set to star Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres/Falcon, Harrison Ford in the role of Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, who is also known as Red Hulk. The Ross character was previously played by William Hurt in the MCU; however, Hurt passed away in March 2022.

The cast further includes Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley, Giancarlo Esposito as Seth Voelker/Sidewinder, Liv Tyler as Betty Ross, and Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns/Leader.

“Anthony Mackie returns as the high-flying hero Sam Wilson, who’s officially taken up the mantle of Captain America,” the synopsis for the film reads. “After meeting with newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross, Sam finds himself in the middle of an international incident. He must discover the reason behind a nefarious global plot before the true mastermind has the entire world seeing red.”

Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World releases in United States theaters on February 14, 2025.
